Public Issues Beneath the Headlines | Sisyphus Express: In Depth
🚘 In This Episode
Hello, Vistopia listeners. This is Sisyphus Highway. I’m J, and I’m Kang.
We are delighted to meet you on Vistopia. We have long been Vistopia listeners ourselves, so it is an honor to share our work here.
As the title suggests, Sisyphus Highway: In Depth is a program that “goes deep into public issues and takes the temperature of public opinion.”
There are two key terms here. One is“public issues,”and the other is“public opinion.”We use“news”as the vehicle for discussing both.
Let us first clarify a few concepts:News reports recently occurring facts. A public issue is a social problem involving the public interest that emerges from one or more news stories. Public opinion is the aggregate of the views, emotions, and attitudes people express about news and public issues.
In today’s media environment, public issues and public opinion are intertwined and may even cause one another. We chose this kind of program because we both worked in media for many years, and that experience gives us a wider range of perspectives.
Sisyphus Highway: In Depth contains twelve chapters, each devoted to one subject and lasting from about three hours to more than five. Each chapter is divided into roughly five episodes, released daily from Monday through Friday, with occasional adjustments for holidays. We look forward to meeting you through sound over the next two-plus months.
The program was produced from March 2025 to May 2026. Over roughly a year, we selected representative news from each period and tried to trace the public issues, social conditions, collective emotions, and patterns of public opinion behind it.
Some episodes examine celebrity stories engulfed in rumor and the communication logic beneath them. Others begin with a particular legal case and explore bride price, a subject that sparks fierce controversy whenever it appears. Some start from policy and recount the development of generic drugs in China. Others follow a widely discussed report: when the descendant of a national treasure accuses a museum of mishandling an artifact, what historical thread stretching across a millennium comes into view?
Publishing the completed program on Vistopia also gave us a chance to look back. Apart from necessary fact-checking and revision, we have preserved its original form. Each episode arose from our concrete encounter with the news as it happened and records what we thought and felt at the time.
What we hope to present in Sisyphus Highway: In Depth is not merely knowledge and information, but structure and logic. We therefore spent a great deal of time discussing and building an information framework for every episode, seeking richer and more varied angles from which to extend each subject and, through that process, broaden our own understanding of public issues.
Every public issue or controversy occupies a different place on a spectrum and within a set of quadrants. Through these subjects and opinions, we canobserve our own political inclinations, emotional positions, and moral judgments, while developing greater empathy for a broader and more complicated social reality.
For us, making Sisyphus Highway: In Depth was a life experience that gave us stronger bones.By connecting with a larger outside world and more concrete realities, we became newly convinced of the importance of self-education and more determined to do our work well.
Although the program’s subjects are relatively serious, every chapter ends with an informal conversation in which we share more of our own observations and feelings. You will also discover that we do not have answers to many questions. We keep ourselves open and thinking by continuing to ask them.
The manuscript for each episode also gathers its references, recommended reading, and mentioned films and texts. If you are interested, you are welcome to read and research further. We also warmly invite you to leave your own thoughts or reading recommendations in the comments.
These twelve chapters summarize our thinking about several representative public issues at the levels of news and public opinion. We hope that, together, they weave a web of information and lay a foundation for understanding public issues.
If, after listening, you pause when reading the news to think a little more about how it spreads, the language it uses, or the issue around which it is framed, the program will have achieved what it most hopes to do.
At a time when information travels ever faster and grows ever more tangled, what we can do is learn to navigate the turbulent current.May we all keep working at it.
See you in the program.
