🚘 In This Episode

Note: This episode was first published on September 13, 2025.
In the previous three episodes, we began with particular faith organizations and discussed how they build authority, contend for power, and operate through supply, demand, and organization in a market for faith. Here we enter our open conversation and return the discussion to this place and moment.
Faith has long exceeded the boundaries of religion and entered our language, culture, emotional relationships, and everyday choices. From Chinese metaphysics, astrology, and mind-body-spirit practice to idols, fandom, and AI, people continually seek a way to explain the world and locate themselves within it.
We begin with how religion shapes culture and narrative, then discuss new forms of belief such as metaphysics and mind-body-spirit practice and how each responds to spiritual needs. Finally, we focus on the relationships among freedom, the self, and faith.
Perhaps what people sometimes desire is never merely an answer, but release from facing choices and bearing life alone. Yetfreedom is a heavy burden, and the self an eternal mystery.Faced with voices claiming to explain everything, how can we preserve our capacity for belief without readily surrendering our capacity to think, choose, and take responsibility?
