Justice and Reality: Think Like a Lawyer
Hello, everyone. I’m Bowie Tsang.
Today I want to tell you about the Zhan Qingyun I know. I met her on a televised public-speaking competition, Shandong TV’s Wonderful China Speaks. She was on my team—something of which I remain very proud.
I remember the first time I saw her speak onstage. I immediately thought: this young woman is so intelligent, so full of ideas—and so much like me when I was young!
Perhaps I wanted to support someone like myself. Had I been my younger self, I too would have hoped to meet someone who appreciated and supported me and helped me keep walking toward my dream. So I chose her.
I do not mean to boast, but Qingyun and I ultimately won the entire competition together.
In truth, I am not especially confident about speaking, much less about teaching someone how to do it.
During the time Qingyun and I worked together, what we did most was talk: what kind of person was she, what did she want to say, and what kind of world did she want to change?
I simply helped uncover the best of her and present it to the audience. Rather than her mentor, I was the person who accompanied her to the championship. That is the Qingyun I know: hardworking and very clear about what she wants.
Why should you listen to Qingyun explain law?
Her background is extraordinary. She studied in Hong Kong and the United States and grew up and learned in different places, which has given her a broad outlook—and Japan too; I nearly forgot!
Because of that breadth, she has encountered different people and values. She sees issues comprehensively and thoughtfully, never in isolation. She considers human feeling, reason, and law on everyone’s behalf—or so I see it.
Why listen to Qingyun speak about law now? Because we live in a world founded on law; these are the rules by which it operates.
We need to understand the rules before we can play well in this world. Even if we choose not to play the game, at least we should not let its rules play us.
That is why learning about law matters. Through Qingyun’s perspective and expertise, I trust she will introduce it warmly, broadly, and accessibly, showing everyone that law is not so difficult: it is part of our lives. So let me recommend Zhan—Qing—yun.
