Vistopia
To Your Unique Self: 40 Lessons in Personality Psychology
Wang Fang
After all these years, the Vistopia app finally has a psychology program!
I wanted to make one many years ago, when we planned an introductory program for every humanities and social-science field. We did not want simplistic surveys. Each introduction should offer a distinctive method or entry point for thinking about human society.
Human civilization, society, and history are immensely complex. Every modern humanities or social-science discipline is a distinct doorway into that whole, seeking something special within it. Each offers a different method and tool for understanding humanity, society, and the world.
With this idea, we planned introductions such as Thinking Like an Economist.
But how do psychologists think? This was difficult because psychology contains so many categories and models that no single account embraces them all. The psychology of personality seemed most relevant to everyone, so we gradually searched for the right presenter.
At last we found Professor Wang Fang, one of China's most engaging teachers able to explain personality psychology with exceptional clarity. The program is fascinating from its opening discussion of the ever-popular zodiac signs.
I do not know how China's horoscope craze began. Is astrology really a good way to classify and understand personality? I am a Capricorn and people call me typical. But am I truly so Capricorn? Have you missed my romantic, uninhibited side? Or did years of being told how a Capricorn must behave lead me to suggest that personality into myself?
Professor Wang first reveals the truth behind astrological personality types, then leads us step by step into scientific understandings of personality, how it forms, and where it may go. Along the way appear classic research paradigms and major psychologists such as Freud.
It is a remarkable program. I warmly invite you to Wang Fang's To the Unique You: 40 Lectures on Personality Psychology.
