35 Lessons in Critical Thinking: Think Like a Debater

Transcript

Hello, I’m Pang Ying. Welcome to the Q&A for Episode 10 of Think Like a Debater.

Q1: What is wrong with this statement? “In debates on legal abortion, everyone asks when life begins. That is meaningless and misses the point. We should discuss the baby’s rights!”

A:The circle resembles “God exists because the Bible says so.” The evidence contains part of the conclusion; one must accept the conclusion to accept its support—classic begging the question.
Its logic is: discussing life’s beginning is meaningless because a baby’s rights matter. But why call it a baby? Debate over when life begins shows no consensus on when a fetus becomes a person. Many do not regard an early embryo, before heartbeat or viability, as a person. Calling it a baby assumes part of the disputed conclusion and uses that conclusion to prove itself.

Q2: “Everyone opposing Marx is a capitalist lackey! Marx clearly explains that efficient mechanized production operated by workers creates surplus value for the few bourgeois owners of production, turning exploitation into fundamental contradiction.”

A:Longer packaging does not change the circle: Marxist theory is used to refute someone who rejects Marxist theory. If I do not accept the framework, why accept it as evidence? The premise contains the disputed conclusion and begs the question.
An aside: rebutting within a framework differs from stepping outside to challenge the framework itself. The latter is useful.
Refuting God’s existence within the Bible’s framework is nearly impossible.
Likewise, challenging the claim that 996 work is a blessing is difficult within an employer’s rules: defining people by rank and salary, placing work above family and leisure, and eliminating those unable to struggle because of health or family. Without stepping outside those assumptions, we cannot evaluate them clearly.
Only after seeing workplaces where people naturally take leave for children’s games, and lives where happiness means family and personal interests rather than becoming CEO, can we judge whether the 996 framework is truly desirable.

Q3: Can you give another circular argument?

A:Long arguments often scatter their core logic, so we must extract and recombine it. Consider a real debate.
Motion: Are first-tier cities still young people’s first employment choice?
