A：Without exercise, Pang gains five jin a month; after exercising, she gains two. Exercise therefore still helps.

This is a common mental error. ‘Pang weighed two jin more in December than November’ looks like a comparison but is actually an absolute value. The real comparison is the world where she exercised against the world where she did not.

Apply the same logic to a social issue.

Gun policy remains highly controversial in the United States. One central dispute is whether civilian gun ownership makes society safer or more dangerous.

Supporters say bad people will obtain guns regardless; if good people also have them for self-defense, the balance makes society safer.

Opponents argue, first, that guns discharge accidentally—a child finds one, or a family argument escalates. Second, drawing a gun requires speed and skill. Attackers have the advantage: once a criminal aims first and orders hands up, the victim cannot draw or search for a weapon, so no balance is achieved.

Both arguments are internally coherent. We need empirical evidence comparing which is borne out in reality: how many accidental shootings occur where guns are legal and how severe they are; whether prohibition makes guns harder for criminals to obtain, leaving ordinary thugs unarmed and the area safer. Each side cites regions and countries supporting its view.

Gun-control advocates cite Australia: after the 1996 National Firearms Agreement, crime continued falling. The NFA is frequently invoked in American gun-control arguments.

Opponents reply that this does not prove the NFA improved safety because Australian crime was already falling, and the trend did not change clearly before and after the ban.

They also introduce compound causes: many causes jointly produce a result. Australia adopted other public-safety measures alongside the NFA, so declines in deaths and injuries cannot clearly be attributed to it.

We will not pursue this complex and disputed causal question. Crime and casualty figures also divide into firearm suicide, homicide, mass shootings, and other categories, each changing differently around implementation.
