35 Lessons in Critical Thinking: Think Like a Debater

Transcript

Hello, I’m Pang Ying. Welcome to the Q&A for Episode 20 of Think Like a Debater.

Q1: What methods would you use to argue that short video helps people relax?

A:Here are several possible arguments.
First, offer positive examples.
The opposition says top Douyin and Kuaishou categories are attractive people, games, humor, food, and music. What is wrong with those? Appetite and attraction are human nature. Such content relaxes us and enriches enjoyment, and each field has depth. Watching is unobjectionable.
Moreover, rankings do not show the proportion of all content. Data indicate only humor accounts for more than 20% of platform followers; games, music, and food each account for about 10%. Short video is diverse, meeting different interests and leisure needs.
What was Douyin users’ favorite leisure activity in 2020? Fishing—fishing videos received 800 million likes.
Rivers, plants, wind, and water; an angler in a quiet place watches the rod and forgets every worry, finding peace in the moment.
Jinli Finance interviewed post-1990 viewers who enjoy fishing clips. Though unable to abandon work and go fishing, they grew calm alongside anglers through video. Fishing also resembles a blind box: the next catch is unknown, and viewers share the surprise. Virtual fishing on Douyin became one interviewee’s nightly habit.
What do post-2000 viewers like? Playing with slime.
Users say many slimes are creative and inexpensive, while stretching and popping bubbles genuinely relieves stress. Many heavily pressured students buy them.
Fishing, slime, hoof trimming, and soap scraping belong to what one educational creator called addictive behaviors. The videos need little content, only direct sensation: mechanical actions provide immediate ease and comfort.
First, the opposition seems to look down on leisure itself. Second, it says leisure cannot solve housing, cars, or money and delays tasks. Let me answer that.
Many healing things need not solve a problem. Emotion does not depend entirely on problem resolution.
Life contains insoluble problems: I am not tall enough; my child is not clever enough. They do not prevent happiness. Finding joy matters. Must someone without conventional success lack a beautiful life? No. Joy has value without producing achievement.
Leisure also contributes greatly to human creativity.
