Finding Peace: 40 Introductory Lessons on Buddhism
Cheng Qing
Hello, I’m Cheng Qing. Welcome to Relief for Life: Forty Introductions to Buddhism.
A few days ago at Vistopia’s Shanghai annual gathering, I spoke with Wang Fang and Wang Xing and met many listeners. Their enthusiasm and curiosity created an unexpected intimacy despite this program’s recent launch—perhaps what Buddhism calls affinity. I hope for more conversation online.
Last time we discussed no-self, Buddhism’s most distinctive view of life and the Buddha’s experience beneath the Bodhi tree. Because it is difficult to understand, this episode first addresses misconceptions, then its meaning in real life.

No-Self Is Not Nihilism

Many immediately ask:if there is no self, how can Buddhist karma and its results operate?Good and bad results seem to need someone to bear them. We feel I suffer; erase I and pleasure and pain appear unsupported. How does that differ from nihilistic annihilation? Who practices, undergoes rebirth, or awakens?
No-self is what the Buddha awakened to. But note:awakening is not reading an idea, analyzing it, finding it reasonable, and claiming mastery of a theory. It requires thought and ever-deeper observation of cognition until the self is seen as illusion. Its apparent solidity is error that produces greed, anger, and ignorance. We notice these afflictions but not how deeper processes construct them; meditation cultivates the concentration and sensitivity required.
Ordinary thought first plants the flag of I, then uses no-self to negate it, as though I becomes no I. Yet we have not vanished; even lying flat cannot sever us from reality. How can the self be gone? This comes from cognition that absolutely affirms or denies. Buddhism says the error is seeing an eternal, absolute self in the five aggregates. It does not deny bodily and mental functions; it says what you took as truly present is not there.
The Buddha therefore did not give no-self as a formula for disciples to repeat while closing themselves to the world. He asked them to go to quiet forests or burial grounds andobserve their own five aggregates.。
