Black Americans were effectively disenfranchised in many parts of the country, particularly in the Southern states, due to discriminatory practices such as literacy tests, poll taxes, grandfather clauses, and outright intimidation and violence. These practices were designed to prevent Black Americans from exercising their right to vote. It wasn't until the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, particularly with the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, that these barriers were significantly dismantled, allowing Black Americans to exercise their right to vote more fully and freely.
