How did the modern world begin?

Beginning in the sixteenth century, this interdisciplinary series follows two inventions—the modern state and the modern citizen—through three centuries of religious conflict, social transformation, political thought, and institutional change.

It asks what modernity destroyed and created, why individuals emerged from older communities, and how the first solutions of the modern world produced dilemmas that remain with us.
