About this program
When do people willingly surrender freedom?
Friedrich Hayek published The Road to Serfdom in 1944, when faith in central planning was sweeping the West. He warned that rational designs and benevolent collective goals could replace individual choice, concentrate power, and lead toward coercion.
Season 7 of the Citizenship Course revisits that warning in an age of algorithms, surveillance, demands for security, and standardized life plans. It asks who benefits from planning, who bears its costs, where social protection becomes control, and how a society can defend both justice and personal liberty.
