In recent episodes, we examined how the news continually magnifies sex:it is consumed, turned into a symbol, and assigned meaning far beyond the event itself.In the Wu Xieyu case, however, we found something different.

Over nearly a decade, the media produced extensive analysis of his family of origin, mother-son relationship, meritocracy, and upbringing. Yetsex—an important clue appearing throughout the case files, his own accounts, his movements while in hiding, and his behavior after the crime—remained at the margins of discussion.

We do not, of course, believe sex can explain everything about the Wu Xieyu case. Nor can a person’s sexual psychology necessarily be derived entirely from family, upbringing, or social environment.Faced with such an extreme case, perhaps we must finally admit that some parts can be understood while others remain inexplicable.
