Hello, I’m Wang Fang, and we are still answering questions. The last several concern the Big Five, especially how to change two traits: high neuroticism and low conscientiousness. This matches survey data: the two things people most want to change are high neuroticism and low conscientiousness. Introversion ranks third, but no one asked this time, so I will assumethat lectureworked.
Let us begin. A listener asks: “I am highly neurotic and suffer severe internal strain. What can I do to improve?”
” I am not a counselor and know few details of your life, so I can offer only actionable methods supported by empirical research. Their effect varies with each person’s circumstances; you can see whether any help you.
Because high neuroticism is sensitive to threats, it frequently brings stress and negative emotion, especially anxiety. Negative feelings themselves consume us, and mobilizing already limited psychological energy to process and reduce them consumes us again. Most recommendations therefore concernresponding to negative emotion more constructively.relate.
My first suggestion is towrite down your anxiety. This is calledexpressive writing. Research finds that spending time writing about what anxiety makes you feel can itself relieve anxiety to some degree and even improve later task performance. Writing expresses and releases emotion, while recording events continuously clarifies thought and encourages more rational reflection. You can also switch grammatical person: write first with “I,” then with “he” or “she.” Changing perspective increases psychological distance, helping you step outside and view yourself and events more objectively while noticing aspects previously overlooked.
