35 Lessons in Critical Thinking: Think Like a Debater
Pang Ying

Transcript

Hello, I’m Pang Ying. Welcome to the post-debate review for Episode 30 of Think Like a Debater.
The motion asked which is sadder: being a substitute for a former love, or childhood sweethearts eventually parting. Zhan chose the latter; I chose being a substitute.
Our clashes followed two lines, one evaluating each scenario. They interwove in the debate; here I will separate their logic.

Line One: The Clash over Being a Substitute

I attacked first.
Imagine learning that your partner chose you only because you resemble an ex and that you can never compare. A substitute never possesses a love of their own or fully has their partner.
Zhan replied that resemblance merely began the relationship. An angry comparison does not prove someone remained a substitute.
She compared her family’s second cat, Modou II, selected for resembling the late Modou I. Two years of real love and attachment now have nothing to do with the first cat.
I had anticipated this strong point. Before debates we ask friends for reasons, questions, and strong intuitions—what our old team called a layperson test. The Layperson Test
It first keeps arguments grounded. Deep logic can drift from real concerns, so asking what people care about preserves our purpose.
Second, it tests whether an unprepared listener accepts a rebuttal or finds it mere sophistry. We try difficult replies on friends in advance.
One friend called the substitute idea false: resemblance to an ex may begin dating, but cannot sustain a relationship by itself.
If no other attraction or compatibility exists, dating soon ends. A lasting relationship must rest on qualities shared by the new couple.
The ex is only an occasion, not the reason love continues; the new love belongs to them. I expected Zhan to use this strong argument and prepared.
Although I had not watched the drama and did not seek an expert fandom discussion, I researched a response.
I argued that the emperor continually compared his current partner with an idealized dead predecessor. Endless comparison and longing made both people suffer.
When Zhen Huan wore the late Empress Chunyuan’s clothes, the emperor punished her disproportionately, showing the former love was more than an initial spark.
Zhan dismissed this as dubious online interpretation shaped by the era, monarchy, and the emperor’s personality—human problems, not love itself.
