This season traces five forces shaping modern subjectivity: individualism; equality and freedom; commerce and capital; mechanistic science; and anti-modern and postmodern critique.
Each brought liberation and new constraints—meaning and loneliness, diversity and power struggles, intimate freedom and alienation, mastery of nature and mechanization. Together they form the contradictory figure called “modern humanity.”
